Fred « snowflake » Toones est un acteur afro-américain né le 5 janvier 1906 en Caroline du Nord (États-Unis), et mort le 13 février 1962 à Los Angeles (États-Unis).

Il est un des acteurs les plus prolifiques de son époque, apparaissant dans plus de 200 films entre 1928 et 1951. Entre 1936 et 1947, Toones travailla sous contrat avec Republic Pictures, apparaissant dans environ 40 des films de cette société de production.

Il joua souvent l'homme noir d'âge moyen avec une voix haut-perchée et un comportement enfantin. Comme « Curly » Howard et Tommy « Tiny » Lister, qui suivirent la tradition d'utiliser un surnom antinomique à la fois comme nom de comédien et comme nom de personnage dans leurs films^[1] « Snowflake » (flocon de neige en français) fut le nom de scène par lequel Toones fut le plus connu. Il utilisa ce nom dès son troisième film, Shanghaied Love sorti en 1931. Dans ce film comme dans plus de 35 autres, « Snowflake » était aussi le nom du personnage joué par Toones^[2].
