Sejarah Anglo-Saxon England

Anglo-Saxon England merujuk pada zaman Zaman Pertengahan England awal, yang berlangsung pada kurun ke-5 sehingga kurun ke-11; setelah berakhirnya Britain Rom sehingga penaklukan Norman pada tahun 1066. Ia terdiri daripada pelbagai kerajaan beraja Anglo-Saxon sehingga tahun 927 apabila ia disatukan sebagai kerajaan beraja England oleh Raja Æthelstan (r. 927–939). Ia menjadi sebahagian daripada Empayar Laut Utara di bawah pemerintahan Cnut si Agung bagi tempoh yang singkat, iaitu sebuah kesatuan peribadi antara England, Denmark dan Norway pada kurun ke-11.

Anglo-Saxon merupakan anggota kumpulan penutur Jermanik yang berhijrah ke separuh bahagian bawah pulau Great Britain daripada bahagian barat daya Eropah yang berhampiran. Oleh itu, sejarah Anglo-Saxon bermula semasa zaman Britain Rom berikutan berakhirnya kawalan Rom, dan kesan-kesan kewujudan kerajaan beraja Anglo-Saxon pada kurun ke-5 dan ke-6 (secara tradisinya dikenali sebagai tujuh buah kerajaan penting: Northumbria, Mercia, Anglia Timur, Essex, Kent, Sussex, dan Wessex), pengkristianan semasa kurun ke-7, ancaman serbuan-serbuan Viking dan peneroka Denmark, penyatuan England secara beransur-ansur di bawah hegemoni Wessex semasa kurun ke-9 dan ke-10, dan tamat dengan penaklukan Norman ke atas England oleh William si Penakluk pada tahun 1066.

Identiti Anglo-Saxon terselamat melangkaui penaklukan Norman,^[1] yang dikenali sebagai Englishry di bawah pemerintahan Norman, dan melalui integrasi sosial dan kebudayaan dengan Celt, Danes dan Anglo-Norman menajdi orang England moden.
